Cheviot Futures

United in a Changing Landscape

fast flowing river
Cheviot Futures is a simple, practical approach that focuses on taking action to adapt to the changing climate.
We are working with farmers and land managers to advise them on funding opportunities, look at new farming techniques and share best practice, we want to support local business in rural Northumberland, helping them become more resilient to predicted changes and move forward, stabilising the local economy.
We want to encourage farmers and land managers to take ownership of the project, suggesting new areas to trial techniques, share knowledge of land issues and lead the project in becoming a UK case study for best practice.
Cheviot Futures has two delivery strands; lowland and upland. The lowland work will be lead by Tweed Forum and the upland work will be delivered by the Northumberland National Park Authority. The organisations are specialists in this area and are already involved in many aspects of the Till catchment. The current work in progress includes:
  • Tree planting to reduce riverbank erosion and reduce flows during flood events
  • Wind breaks at the Fenton Centre
  • Wetland creation
  • Grip blocking
  • Improvements to the Fenton Centre and Ingram Visitors Centre to promote climate change adaptation measures to local businesses and communities
